Message from the President
Committee reports for the week of August 24
8/28/2009 12:44:00 PM
The last week of every month is typically the busiest as the Chamber's Infrastructure, Education and Natural Resources Committees all meet. On Tuesday, the Infrastructure Committee welcomed parish manager Al Levron who reviewed a number of parish projects which will be funded by the Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) that we are receiving from the federal government to assist in our recovery from hurricanes Gustav and Ike.

On Wednesday, the Education Committee met with Superintendent Philip Martin to inform him that the Chamber has endorsed the rededication of the one-cent sales tax which is one of the proposals on an October 17 ballot. The proposal, which is NOT A NEW TAX, is a rededication of an existing tax to allow for the construction of new schools. The committee also discussed plans to hold a Partners In Education social event on October 8 at the new BP Houma Operations Learning Center located at 1579 Hwy. 311, Schriever, North of HWY 90.

On Thursday, the Natural Resources Committee met with representatives of the Morganza Action Coalition including its President, Berwick Duval. The Chamber has been a longtime supporter of MAC and its efforts to have the Morganza-to-the-Gulf hurricane protection system authorized, funded and built. In light of recent efforts of out-of-town groups attempting to thwart Morganza's completion, the Chamber is committed to educating the community and its members about these groups such as the Gulf Restoration Network.
