Eric Gautier, a consultant with the ES&H Consulting and Training Group, recently traveled to Lagos, Nigeria to provide training to a U.S. vessel crew. The class focused on Hazardous Materials storage on vessels as it is subject to various regulations, including those promulgated by the U.S. Coast Guard under Titles 33 and 46, and by the U.S. Department of Transportation under Title 49. The principal goal of the regulations is the safety of vessel personnel and also the prevention of pollution from the materials transported or carried by vessels.

The training also included requirements on stowage, ships' stores, marking and labeling, dangerous cargo manifest, and inspection procedures. Titles 46 and 49 apply to all U.S.-flagged vessels regardless of the areas where they operate.
