Award-Winning Books to Village East Middle School - Wednesday, October 12, 2011

Terrebonne Parish Library System was awarded a grant from the State Library of Louisiana and received a set of award-winning books that was presented to Village East Middle School librarian Crystal Robichaux by Terrebonne Parish Main Library children's manager Cherie Mahaffey. Young Readers' Choice Award is an annual state-wide reading enrichment program whose purpose is to foster a love of reading in children by motivating them to participate in the selection and recognition of outstanding books. Each student who reads at least three books from the nominated list may vote for his or her favorite until February 1, 2012. This year teens in high school can vote too, by reading at least two from a list of ten nominated books. All titles are available from the Terrebonne Parish Library System and many are available at school libraries.
The Louisiana Young Readers' Choice Award is a program of the Louisiana Center for the Book and was founded in 1999 with the first award given in 2000. Participation in this program has climbed from 5,485 votes the first year to over 29,000 students participating in 2010. Now entering its 11th year, the program continues to encourage Louisiana's youth to read for pleasure. Meg Placke, Associate State Librarian said, "I am pleased that Terrebonne Parish Library is supporting this program, which promotes literacy and reading for pleasure to Louisiana's youth. The State Library feels certain that this project will cultivate a quality relationship between the public libraries and their local schools. A special thank you to Dr. James R. and Ann A. Peltier, with additional support from Perma-Bound Books, for providing the funds for these book-set awards. During these hard economic times our supporters are more important than ever.” |
