The Louisiana State Treasurer held a presentation warning of dire straits ahead, if Louisiana doesn’t curb its spending.

Congressman Garret Graves expressed concern Tuesday about a House-passed flood-insurance reform proposal he says could result in unaffordable cost increases for Louisiana homeowners.

It was among a range of issues Graves, R-Baton Rouge, covered during a speech to business and political officials at the Cypress Columns meeting hall in Gray. The luncheon was sponsored by the Houma-Terrebonne, Lafourche and Thibodaux chambers of commerce.

Local lawmaker seeks flood insurance reform

The National Flood Insurance Program is in jeopardy.

That’s what state Rep. Jerome Zeringue, R-Houma, said today during a Houma-Terrebonne Chamber of Commerce Luncheon.

As the executive director of the new Louisiana Flood Risk Coalition, Zeringue spoke to chamber members about the problems facing the program and how the coalition plans to address them.

One of the first objectives is to increase participation, he said.

Former Terrebonne Parish President Michel Claudet received The Courier’s Most Useful Citizen Award during the Houma-Terrebonne Chamber of Commerce’s 89th annual banquet tonight.

“I almost didn’t come tonight,” the stunned businessman and former public servant said after being given the award.

Claudet, who served two terms as parish president from 2008 to 2016, said his work to head-off rising flood insurance costs was one of his crowning achievements.
